Meaningful connections can look different for each of us. With the ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ on February 17th, this month we are thinking about how these acts could support, form or maintain social connections. Check out our tips for February here:
Fresh air – consider somewhere you enjoy going for a walk, for example, by the beach or a national or country park. This could support making connections with nature and enjoying the simplicities in life. Why not ask someone to join or offer to walk a dog for a friend for some company.
Reach out – Recognise your feelings. Just as you can feel thirsty and reach for a drink, if you’re feeling lonely, why not reach for your phone to give someone a call or send a nice message. It could spark conversation with someone else who is craving social connection too!
A change of scenery – visit a café or coffee shop. Take opportunities to open conversation, for example, when ordering a drink or speaking to passersby. Take a book, magazine, puzzle or journal to enjoy. Not caught up with a friend for a while? Why not invite them along. Have a look at ‘The Chatty Café Scheme’ (https://thechattycafescheme.co.uk/) to see if there’s a table near you!
Celebrate kindness – This month hosts ‘Random Acts of Kindness Day’ on February 17th 2025. Recognise how small acts of kindness could support opportunities for social connection. Offer to put out or take in your neighbours bin, surprise someone with a cake or check out many other ideas at https://www.randomactsofkindness.org/kindness-ideas which could support making connections with others.
Get green – With spring in the distance, start thinking about growing your own plants, flowers or herbs. This can provide opportunities to connect with nature. Search for a local gardening or floristry group to share knowledge and ideas or join a class to meet like-minded others. Enjoy watching nature grow and pick flowers to gift for others once grown, rather than buying from a store, to give a personal touch.
Grab your trainers! – Join a parkrun, a free, regular community event that whilst supporting getting your fresh air and physical activity, also provides an opportunity to meet and support others. Check their page out here https://www.parkrun.org.uk/
