Loneliness: The Next Five Years

Our online international conference is set for Thursday 8 February and we’re looking forward to welcoming you.

The event will host an amazing list of speakers - experts in the field of loneliness research and practice from around the world who are making a difference.

We will be joined by Professor Manuela Barreto from the University of Exeter whose morning keynote will explore findings from the WCPP Loneliness Inequalities Evidence review. We will also hear from Richard Kramer (CEO of Sense), Danna Walker (CEO of Built By Us) Dr. Lorna Wang (Deputy Head, Department of Hospitality at University of Surrey), Dr. Christopher Mikton (Technical Officer, World Health Organization) and many more!

From creating system-wide approaches to addressing loneliness, to exploring the role of arts and creativity, we will discuss the key issues identified by you as we look ahead to the #NextFiveYears. Join us and be part of the conversation.

What we are thinking about

As the Campaign to End Loneliness will be closing in April 2024, we're taking the opportunity to highlight the resources and research we have done over the years.

In October 2020, we launched our report Promising Approaches Revisited: Effective action on loneliness in later life. This report was an update to the seminal Promising Approaches to reducing loneliness in later life we published jointly with Age UK in 2015 and presented an updated framework for commissioners, local authorities, health bodies and third sector organisations interested in reducing loneliness in later life. The Promising Approaches Framework works from what we understand about loneliness, to solutions that help us to address it, as well as the approach across a community.

Good Practice Mentors: Reflecting on a year of collaboration

Jessica Duffy explores a year of impactful collaboration between the Good Practice Mentor (GPM) team and the Tackling Loneliness Hub in their mission to address loneliness among older people. From securing funding to addressing challenges in organisational memory, Jessica recounts experiences, shares successful collaborations, and underscores the importance of peer networks in the ongoing efforts to address loneliness.

Loneliness epidemic unmasked: a global health challenge

The Global Story looks at what’s behind the huge numbers of people around the word feeling lonely and explores solutions with the BBC’s global health correspondent, Tulip Mazumdar, and Professor Manuela Barreto, who was part of the largest study into loneliness to date

Youth Loneliness Focus Group

Researchers at the University of Manchester and Queen Mary University of London are looking to learn more about what loneliness means to young people, so that they can develop a new questionnaire to measure youth loneliness. To do this, they are hosting some online focus groups for people aged 18–24 years old. Please share with your relevant networks.

As a thank-you for taking part the participant will be offered a £15 voucher, even if they decide to leave before the end of the session. If you have any questions email Lily Verity or Laura Riddleston.
