Our statement of closure

It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing that the Campaign to End Loneliness will close in April 2024, along with the What Works Centre for Wellbeing who have generously hosted us since 2021.

We want to take this opportunity to thank the network of pioneers, activists, supporters, policy and practice professionals, and researchers who we have worked alongside; the funders who have made our work possible; and the staff and volunteers who brought this work to life over the last 12 years.

We are excited to have the chance to deliver our final Campaign to End Loneliness Conference on Thursday 8 February 2024 and we hope you will join us to celebrate the success of our movement.

The Campaign to End Loneliness is coming to an end, but the fight for a better connected, less lonely world is just getting started. If you think you can play a part in carrying forward this legacy, please contact us on info@ctel.blazeoven.co.uk.uk

Our call for kindness to combat loneliness as number of isolated individuals grow

We have teamed up with the Sunday Express this holiday season to spread a simple message: reach out. For most of us, the Christmas season is about sharing joy with those we care about. But as we look forward to being with loved ones over this festive period, the Sunday Express is calling on readers to spare a thought for those for whom life has taken a different turn.

Loneliness and scams

We recently teamed up with UK Finance’s Take Five to Stop Fraud campaign to discuss loneliness and scams at an online event. You can more about loneliness and scams and watch the event recording in our latest blog post.

What we are reading

How Communities Around the World Are Connecting Social Isolation and Health

Our co-founder Paul Cann discusses how local communities addressing social isolation as a public health concern could be the key to healing in an epidemic of loneliness. The article says that we must make sure we are connected to one another, but connecting this issue to our health might be the most important connection we make.

The impact of the Age UK Travelling Companions pilot

The Travelling Companions project was a pilot programme run by Age UK through seven of its local partners, and funded by the Department for Transport under its Tackling Loneliness with Transport Pilot Fund. The aim of the project was to support people at risk of, or experiencing, loneliness and social isolation to develop the confidence to travel independently, by providing one-to-one time-limited support from a volunteer Travelling Companion who would work with them to overcome practical and emotional barriers to travel.

In total, the service supported 320 older people over the course of 679 sessions. Each older person was matched with a Travelling Companion, to receive personalised and specific one-to-one support to help them achieve their travel goals.

We are delighted to have worked with Age UK on the qualitative evaluation for this pilot. Read more about the data collected over the course of the pilot programme and at its conclusion – through interviews, focus groups, goal setting and session data - via the AgeUK website.
