Telephone-based care can prevent loneliness and depression finds major study

Structured telephone-based psychological care can prevent loneliness and depression, according to an NIHR-funded study. The Behavioural Activation in Social Isolation trial or BASIL+ was a major clinical trial carried out during the COVID pandemic. The trial found that when older people received weekly phone calls over 8 weeks, their mental health and quality of life improved. They received calls from a specially trained coach who encouraged them to maintain their social connections and remain active.

Silicon Valley county becomes first in U.S. to declare loneliness a public health emergency

Loneliness is officially a health emergency in California's San Mateo County, which is located in the San Francisco Bay Area and includes part of Silicon Valley. The county's Board of Supervisors passed a resolution on Tuesday that declared loneliness a public health crisis and pledged to explore measures that promote social connection in the community. It’s the first county in the U.S. to make such a declaration.
The Loneliness Room: A Creative Enthnography of Loneliness
The project explores the isolation of loneliness and the social, creative, and experiential possibilities of loneliness. The overall aim of The Loneliness Room is to shine a critical and creative light on where, when, how and why loneliness is encountered. It intends to provide a new creative canvass with which to better understand how people live lonely, providing them with the artistic space to represent their loneliness.

Loneliness in the workplace: a mixed-method systematic review and meta-analysis

Loneliness is a risk factor for a range of mental and physical health problems and has gained increasing interest from policy-makers and researchers in recent years. However, little attention has been paid to loneliness at work and its implications for workers and employers. The findings from this paper indicate that loneliness is associated with poor occupational functioning and well-being among workers. Results also show that loneliness is associated with modifiable aspects of the work environment, suggesting that the workplace may offer a fruitful avenue for interventions targeting loneliness.

Older men and loneliness: a cross-sectional study of sex differences in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing

Research into men and masculinities suggests men may be more reluctant than women to state they are lonely, more reliant on partners/spouses and/or alcohol to tackle it, and that this may be a result of poorer social relationships. Ageing is often associated with loneliness, and research has indicated gendered results in older people, but existing evidence lacks generalisability and cultural context. This study tests hypotheses on sex differences in loneliness in older England-based men and women.

Evaluating measures to assess loneliness in autistic adults

Several measures have been developed to assess loneliness in the general population. This papers examined if, and how accurately, widely-used measures capture the experience of loneliness in autistic adults. A total of 203 autistic participants from the UK completed an online survey, which included two widely-used loneliness questionnaires: the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale Version 3 and the Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults (SELSA). Participants completed the measures and provided their views on how well they captured their experiences of loneliness.
