The Youth Loneliness Scale

Two young people sit facing each other on a swing
The Youth Loneliness Scale (YLS) is a project which aims to create a new questionnaire to measure loneliness, specifically designed to be used by adolescents and young adults.

Principle Investigator Prof Jennifer Lau and Research Associates Dr Laura Riddleston (Queen Mary University of London) and Dr Lily Verity (University of Manchester) explain the initial findings of their research project in our latest blog post.

You can also hear from Lily Verity at our conference on Thursday 8 February at the session on ‘Young people and loneliness: What are the drivers of youth loneliness and how can we address it?’

What we are thinking about

Kate Shurety
Welcoming Kate Shurety as Interim Programme Director of the Campaign

I’m Kate and have recently (re)joined the Campaign to End Loneliness as Interim Programme Director of the Campaign over the next few months while we work through ensuring the best possible legacy for all the learning, experience and knowledge they have gathered over the past 13 years. I’ve worked at the Campaign before, so feel incredibly lucky to get to step into it twice.

Of course, the Campaign to End Loneliness is about many more people (and organisations) than are in the core team. It has always been about wider collaboration and sharing across organisational and sector boundaries. There is now more activity, commitment and knowledge on the issue than ever before and Mhairi, Helen, Tilly and I will be working to make sure the resources, reports and knowledge that so many have contributed to remain publicly and freely available for the sector. We will be keeping you updated in the weeks to come as well as sharing important work from the past 13 years and a planned legacy report.

It’s great to be back in the loneliness world (never less lonely and busier than ever!) so do reach out to contact me on kate@ctel.blazeoven.co.uk.uk if you want to catch up in the meantime.

Loneliness inequalities: How Sense is responding

In 2014, Richard Kramer, CEO of Sense, contributed to our Alone in the Crowd report, a collection of essays we brought together to shine a light on the individuals behind the statistics, helping us to better understand who experiences loneliness, and what particular challenges they may face.

As we look ahead to the next five years of addressing loneliness, Richard updates us on what the sector has achieved, and what more needs to be done. Join him for the panel discussion on ‘Loneliness inequalities: How organisations are responding’ at our conference to continue the conversation.

It is a collaboration between University College London, the University of Manchester, the National Academy for Social Prescribing and the Social Prescribing Youth Network and is funded by the Kavli Trust. The programme will be split into three phases, and will work closely with schools, educational professionals, social prescribers and young people.

Five projects awarded in NWA Loneliness call

As part of the United against loneliness action programme, an initiative of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport to reduce loneliness in the Netherlands, the Dutch Research Council has awarded five loneliness research projects funding. This research focuses on some under-represented target groups where loneliness is prevalent. These are: young people (11-17 years), young adults (18-26 years), informal caregivers of people with chronic or lifelong illnesses or disabilities, people with a mild learning disability, and elderly people from a non-European country of origin.
