How can we address loneliness and social isolation amongst disabled people?

Loneliness has received new-found levels of attention in recent years. The covid-19 pandemic got us all talking about the importance of social connection and the difficulty of experiencing loneliness. Many of us felt lonely during the pandemic, but for those who were already affected by social isolation and loneliness, this experience wasn’t necessarily new. Experiences of social isolation and loneliness during the pandemic were highly unequal, and disproportionately affected people with disabilities.

Empowering user voice in addressing loneliness

Last week, members of the Tackling Loneliness Hub came together for a workshop which explored how we can best harness the views and needs of people experiencing loneliness to help in the scoping, planning and delivery of our work. Empowering users to participate in the development of services can be a powerful tool in removing barriers to participation. It can also help to ensure we create more effective and empathetic solutions to address the diverse needs of people experiencing loneliness.

Call for Papers - Loneliness and social isolation

BMC Public Health has launched a collection which calls for submissions on loneliness and social isolation as a public health concern. Although loneliness and social isolation are commonly misconstrued as conditions existing on an individual scale, these are global public health issues which are linked to various physical and mental conditions including high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, depression and a weakened immune system.

Rural mums offered help with mental health

Motherhood is often thought to be one of life's best experiences, but many mums find it lonely. When Bethanie Casey had her babies she couldn't understand why she was feeling so low. Living in Norton, Powys, Ms Casey experienced residual postnatal depression after both pregnancies. She is one of a number of women who benefitted from an intervention service, delivered by the charity Mind, for mums with mental health challenges.

As Long As I Keep Busy

As Long As I Keep Busy is an ongoing photographic social documentary which is adding to the knowledge about people living alone in the UK. In the UK over eight million people live alone, almost 12 percent of the population and the numbers are increasing. However, living alone is also a world-wide social phenomenon with links to loneliness, potential isolation and poor physical and mental health.
