What lies ahead for the next five years of loneliness? On Wednesday 21 June, we brought together a community of passionate individuals and key thinkers to discuss how we can address loneliness in the next five years. The event was chaired by Sarah O’ Grady, Social Affairs Correspondent of the Daily Express, with panelists Noreena Hertz, author of The Lonely Century, and Kate Jopling, Independent Consultant. Thank you to everyone who joined us in person and online, and to our event sponsors Sky and Togetherly.

It’s time to talk about loneliness inequalities

In this blog, Josh Coles-Riley explains why the Wales Centre for Public Policy has commissioned a major new review of research on loneliness inequalities – and why WCPP is now planning an event to bring together policymakers, practitioners, researchers and lived experience experts to explore what policy and practice changes are needed to tackle these.

What we are reading

Loneliness in life stories by people with disabilities

This Finnish study uses data from a life story collection ‘Life of Disabled Persons in Finland 2013-14’. Merja Tarvainen identified stories from the collection where the writers had mentioned experiences of loneliness and examines experiences of loneliness in relation to lifecourse stages and how they are shaped by social and cultural attitudes and contexts. Findings are presented in three categories: ‘Unbelonging in childhood’, ‘Disjointed youth’ and ‘Disaffiliation in adulthood’.

Against the Current

'Against the Current' is a first-hand account of one teenagers' struggle to balance his needs for social connection and to protect his mental health in a world where social media use among young people is the norm.

Disability, Loneliness and Health in the UK: Cross-sectional survey

This study involves longitudinal analysis of data from Understanding Society, the UK’s household panel survey. It examines differences in prevalence of loneliness among four ‘disability status’ groups: those experiencing persistent disability, disability onset, disability offset and no disability. It tests how far differences in loneliness can be explained by life circumstances (for example, financial strain, being unemployed, living alone) which can potentially be modified. It also examines differences in the association of loneliness with physical and mental health according to disability status.
