Tackling workplace loneliness should be strategic priority

With more than 1 in 10 of us experiencing loneliness at work often or always and nearly half of us feeling lonely at work some of the time, tackling workplace loneliness should be a strategic priority for organisations going into a new financial year.

The fourth annual report celebrates the work DCMS have undertaken with a wide range of partners to raise awareness of loneliness and improve the support for lonely people in England over the last five years. It also captures new and ongoing actions that government departments are committed to delivering between 2023-2025.

Almost 20,000 women living in London have joined a club tackling loneliness since pandemic restrictions ended. Holly Cooke founded The London Lonely Girls Club on Facebook in 2018 after moving to the city from Stoke-on-Trent. She said the club had 10,000 members at the start of 2022, and had "grown spectacularly" in the last year to almost 31,000 people.

Women's alcohol use is changing, and some research shows that drinking behaviour in women of an age often associated with stages of menopause is increasing. However, there is very little research focused on why these changes may be happening. This online anonymous survey is being conducted by researchers from the Oxford Brookes University Psychology Department to explore whether drinking behaviour is associated with loneliness in women aged 40-65 years old. Participants do not have to drink alcohol or feel lonely to take part.

The survey takes approximately 20 minutes.

What we are reading
|
This systematic review from Umagami et al. (2022) reviews 34 included studies on loneliness in autistic adults. It examines the extent to which research has focused on understanding the experience of loneliness among autistic adults and has used appropriate measures; as well as dimensions of loneliness which have been explored and factors associated with loneliness in this group.

Kim Leadbeater's report looks at how government should put the health & well-being of the nation at the heart of policy making by taking a holistic, cross-departmental, cross sector approach, and focusing much more on prevention and early intervention.

This systematic review from Bower et al. (2023) reviews current evidence from 57 included studies on the connection between loneliness and the built environment. It organises information under two overarching themes: 1. the impact of the structured environment (material aspects of the built environment such as design quality, urban infrastructure, public and natural spaces and mobility) and 2. of the lived environment (non-material elements such as perceptions of the neighbourhood, affordability, tenure and safety) on loneliness.

A Centre for Loneliness Studies event to hear research into how workplaces can tackle loneliness. Dr. Anna Topakas will share insights from extant research and theorising on workplace relationships and the role of managers. Kate Jopling will present findings from a report commissioned for the All Party Parliamentary Group on Tackling Loneliness and Connected Communities which highlighted the role of business and employers.
