Our friends at Befriending Networks are celebrating 10 years of befriending and creating connections this year, so Communications Officer, Dominic Lo explains how you can support their work during this year’s National Befriending Week from 1-7 November.
In 2012 The Campaign to End Loneliness supported the launch and first national Befriending Week! Here at Befriending Networks, we are delighted that 10 years on we still work closely and support each other’s work in raising awareness and sharing ways to tackle loneliness. This year as I’m sure you can imagine Befriending Week 1-7 November 2022 has extra significance as we celebrate 10 years of befriending and creating Connections.
We would be delighted if you could join our celebrations and raise awareness about everything #BefriendingIs this #BefriendingWeek:
Everyone needs other people, but not everyone has someone. Befriending offers supportive, reliable relationships through volunteer befrienders to people who would otherwise be socially isolated. Around the UK, there are 370-member befriending projects within our network which organise support to children and young people, families, people with mental ill-health, people with learning disabilities and older people, amongst many others. Befriending can provide people with a new direction in life, open up a range of activities and provide companionship for some this leads to increased self-esteem and self-confidence. Befriending can also reduce the burden on other services which people may use as they seek social contact.
This #BefriendingWeek download our free resources and spread awareness through your own organisations’ social media accounts or check out @befriendingnet on Twitter and share the fantastic stories of befriender and befriendees that we will be sharing across the week! They demonstrate the many and varied types of befriending and people who both volunteer and benefit from befriending.
